The country

A flat-topped plateau mostly around 8,300 to 9,200 ft breaks into deep canyons and lowlands. Cover ranges from sage, oak brush and pinyon-juniper low, through ponderosa and lodgepole pine, up to aspen, spruce and open meadows on top.

Access and pressure

Both the National Forest plateau and the BLM canyon country are open to public access, giving a broad mix of high-plateau timber and lower canyon terrain to work.

How to hunt Unit 61

Glass the meadow edges and aspen-conifer stringers on the plateau early, and use the deep canyons and oak brush benches as travel corridors when elk drop off the top.
