Elevationroughly 6,500 to 10,000 ft
2026 licenseMoved back to unlimited antlered bull (OTC) for 2nd and 3rd rifle in 2026.

The country

A mix of sagebrush and oak brush at lower elevations rising into aspen groves and dark timber up high. Part of the broader White River country, which is majority public land.

Access and pressure

Good road and ATV access, which also means more company. Heavy ATV traffic is common near the main roads, so pressure drops fast the farther you hike from a trailhead.

How to hunt Unit 12

Because access is easy, the elk that survive opening weekend push into the steeper timbered pockets away from roads. Plan to work at least a drainage or two off the nearest road.

Know the unit. Now find where the elk move.

ScoutIQ forecasts daily elk movement inside your unit, with a confidence score on every call.

Terrain, forest, and elevation details are drawn from public land and habitat sources. License types change year to year, so always confirm a unit's current status and boundaries on the official Colorado Parks and Wildlife big game brochure before you buy.
