More than half of the unit is the Flat Tops Wilderness: wide meadows, open parks, alpine basins, and stands of Engelmann and blue spruce, Douglas fir, and large aspen groves. Foothills carry mountain mahogany, pinyon-juniper, and oak brush.
The wilderness core is foot and horseback only, so motorized pressure is far lower than the neighboring units. The tradeoff is effort and weather at elevation.
This is a unit that rewards fitness. Get into the wilderness parks and basins early, glass the open meadow edges at first and last light, and be ready for snow to move elk down in 3rd season.
