North or south? The direction a slope faces changes everything.

Two slopes, same mountain, completely different habitat.

The way a hillside is angled toward, or away from, the sun changes what grows on it, how warm it gets, how fast it dries out, and how snow lingers. Learn to read that, and a flat satellite image starts telling you where elk feed, where they bed, and how they move between the two.

01What is slope aspect?

Aspect is simply the compass direction a slope faces. Stand on a hillside, look straight downhill, and note the direction your boots are pointing. That is the aspect. A slope that falls away toward the south is south-facing. One that falls away toward the north is north-facing.

It matters because of one thing: the sun. In the Rockies the sun tracks across the southern half of the sky. So south-facing slopes catch direct sunlight for most of the day, while north-facing slopes sit in their own shadow and get very little. That single difference cascades into temperature, moisture, snow, and the plants that can survive there.

South-facing

Angled toward the sun, more direct light.

North-facing

Angled away from the sun, mostly shade.

Ridge

The line where the two aspects meet.

East and west slopes sit in between: east catches gentle morning sun, west bakes in the hot afternoon. But north versus south is where the difference is loudest, so that is where we will focus.

02The two faces of the mountain

Once you know which way a slope faces, you can predict a lot about what is growing on it and how elk might use it. Read this as a starting point, not a law.

North-facing · cooler, wetter, more cover
Holds moisture. A lusher, greener understory that stays green later into the season.
Runs cooler all day. Elk stay comfortable without burning energy.
Grows dense timber. Thermal and security cover elk can disappear into.
Holds snow longest. Lingers into spring, comes earliest in fall.
Think: bedding and security.
South-facing · warmer, drier, more open
Soaks up sun all day. The first ground to warm up and dry out.
Opens into grasses, forbs, and shrubs. Different forage than the timber.
Greens up earliest. But can bake brown by late summer.
Melts off first. Often the only feed available in deep winter.
Think: feeding and seasonal use.

Here is the part most people get wrong, so slow down on it: north equals bedding, south equals feeding is a tendency, not a rule. It bends with the season, the weather, and the pressure.

In hot, dry early-season conditions a south face can bake out until there is nothing worth eating on it, and elk lean hard on the cool, green north slopes for both feed and shade. In deep winter the opposite flips true: snow buries the north-slope timber while the south face melts clear, and suddenly that sunny, open slope is the only place elk find grass. Add a little hunting pressure and everything shifts toward whichever aspect offers the best cover, regardless of the food.

So do not memorize the outcome. Memorize the cause, which is sun, moisture, and cover, and you can reason out what any slope is doing on any given week.

03Put them together

This is the whole game, and it is the same lesson as the benches and the saddles: good habitat in isolation is just scenery. A north-facing bedding slope only matters when the pieces around it line up.

A north-facing bedding slope gets interesting the moment you notice quality feed within easy reach, water down in the drainage, terrain that lets elk move between the two without exposing themselves, and, just as importantly, limited human access. That is not one clue. That is four or five clues stacking up in the same place.

What to look for around the aspect
North timber — shaded bedding and security cover.
South feed — sun-fed grasses, forbs, and shrubs.
Water — a creek or seep in the drainage below.
Travel terrain — an easy line linking feed to bed.
Low pressure — no roads or trailheads blowing it out.

Don't just find good habitat. Find habitats that connect.

04Find it on the map

The best part: you can read all of this from your couch. On a satellite or topo map, aspect, vegetation, and terrain all show up together. You just have to look at them at the same time instead of one layer at a time.

Dark, continuous timber that stays green usually marks the cool north faces. Lighter, more open ground, tan grass, scattered brush, exposed rock, tends to be the sunny south faces. Find the ridge line dividing them, and you have found the seam where bedding meets feeding.

Try it: pull up your unit, find one clean ridge, and name the aspect on each side before you look at anything else. Then check the timber. Does it match what you predicted?
